International Graduate Admission

MSU offers a variety of master's degree programs to help you further your career and expand your educational opportunity.

Admission Process

All international students must have their transcripts evaluated by a licensed credential evaluator from www.naces.org. (It appears that WES www.wes.org is the most popular). International students who qualify for admission are required to take the English Language Institute Test of the University of Michigan, the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) given by the Educational Testing Service. If the Michigan Test is taken, a minimum score of 82 is required. Students taking the IELTS must score a minimum of 5.5. A TOEFL score of 500 on the old testing system or 61 on the new system is required for admission to all graduate programs except the Master of Business Administration program, the Master of Science in Information Systems, and Biology, which require a score of 525 (old system) or 70 (new system) for admission. International students who have completed a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the US are exempt from this requirement. MSU's TOEFL code is 1487.

***NOTICE*** In keeping with new federal regulations governing F-1 visa holders, international students pursuing a graduate degree are required to be enrolled in at least 6 hours of face-to-face courses. Only one online course can be counted towards the required 9 credit hours that must be completed each semester in order to maintain legal F-1 status. Due to the structure of several of MSU’s online graduate programs and the current lack of face-to-face courses being offered, international students requiring an I-20 may only be admitted to certain programs. Please email admissions@moreheadstate.edu for details.

International students will be officially admitted and issued a Form I-20A only after the Graduate Office has been notified that they have passed the English Test successfully, have met program admission requirements, and have submitted a statement certifying their ability to meet all financial obligations. The TOEFL/IELTS examination is given regularly in most foreign countries.

International Students, please submit the following materials:

  • Application for Admission to Graduate Study
  • Official credential evaluation from an organization on www.naces.org.
  • Official original report of your English proficiency score >> View Conditional Admission Policy
  • Official original report of your GRE/GMAT score
  • Verification of finances in the amount of $22,000 U.S. dollars (financial statement on official stationary with address and telephone number)
  • Original letter from your sponsor and verification of sponsor’s financial ability. (If you have a sponsor)

If you are admitted to graduate study you will be required to register as a full-time student and you must maintain a 3.0 grade point average.
